Intervista a Pam Godwin

1. Chi è Pam Godwin? Può raccontarci qualcosa di te?

Ho sposato il mio fidanzatino d’infanzia. Siamo sposati da ventisette anni e abbiamo due figli. Sono vegetariana, amo i film horror e trascorro la maggior parte del tempo nel mio giardino.

2. Quando e perché hai iniziato a scrivere?

Ho iniziato a scrivere romance dieci anni fa perché cercavo una storia d’amore con delle sfumature più dark. Volevo leggere romance dai contenuti più crudi e proibiti e dieci anni fa non c’erano molti romanzi di quel genere. Così ho deciso di scriverli.

3. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa del tuo processo creativo? Hai uno stile specifico di scrittura? O lo modifichi ogni volta per dare al nuovo romanzo un’impronta unica? Di cosa hai bisogno quando scrivi (caffè, cioccolato, vino, musica…)?

Delineo da subito tutti i miei libri. Ogni storia è unica. Personaggi diversi. Trame diverse. Adoro l’originalità. Bevo tantissimo caffè mentre scrivo e ho bisogno di assoluto silenzio senza interruzioni.

4. Perché dark romance? Cosa ti ha portato verso questo genere?

Amo l’horror e spesso faccio il tifo per il cattivo, sperando nel lieto fine. Il dark romance mi permette di tirare fuori il lato positivo nel cattivo o nell’antieroe e di dare a lei o a lui la meritata storia d’amore.

5. Dove trovi le idee per i tuoi libri?

Prendo ispirazione dalle notizie sulla vita reale. La verità è più strana della finzione, no? Ci sono così tante cose affascinanti e terribili che accadono in tutto il mondo ogni giorno.

6. SOTTO LA CENERE è stato uno dei tuoi primi libri. Quale è stata la cosa più difficile nello scrivere questa storia?

In SOTTO LA CENERE il cattivo è talmente terribile da non poterlo redimere. L’eroina soffre molto a causa sua. La tortura e l’abuso sono state le cose più difficili da scrivere in questa storia.

7. Come scegli e dai vita ai tuoi personaggi? Ci puoi dare un’idea sui protagonisti di SOTTO LA CENERE? Cosa fanno di così speciale?

Adoro gli eroi tormentati. Sia Charlee che Jay sono ossessionati dal loro tragico passato. Le loro storie personali sono state dolorose, ma la loro sopravvivenza li ha resi forti e le loro storie sono fonte di ispirazione.

8. Quali libri hanno influenzato maggiormente la tua vita?

L’ora delle streghe di Anne Rice e la Trilogia di Kushiel di Jacqueline Carey.

9. Quali sono i tuoi autori/autrici preferiti?

Jacqueline Carey, Jewel E. Ann, Lydia Michaels, Emma Scott, Kresley Cole, R. Lee Smith.

10. Al di fuori della scrittura cosa ti piace fare? Quali sono i tuoi hobby?

Naturalmente, amo leggere. Preferisco trascorrere il mio tempo libero a leggere più di qualsiasi altra cosa. Adoro anche fare giardinaggio e prendermi cura dei miei levrieri ormai vecchi.

11. Quali sono i tuoi progetti al momento e quelli futuri? Ci puoi dare qualche anticipazione?

Al momento sto lavorando a un dark romance storico che ha come protagonisti i pirati, SEA OF RUIN. Dovrei pubblicarlo per la fine del 2019. Poi finirò gli ultimi tre volumi della serie dark romance, the Deliver series. UNSHACKLE (vol. 7). DOMINATE (vol. 8). COMPLICATE (vol. 9). Dovrebbero uscire nel 2020.

INTERVIEW WITH PAM GODWIN

1. Who is Pam Godwin? Tell us something about yourself! 

I married my childhood sweetheart. We’ve been married for twenty-seven years and have two children. I am a vegetarian, love horror movies, and spend a lot of time in my garden.

2. When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing romance novels ten years ago, because I was looking for darker romance. I wanted to read romance with a gritty forbidden edge, and there weren’t many romance novels like that ten years ago. So I decided to write them.

3. What is your writing process? Do you have a specific writing style? Did you change it from one book to the other to give each its unique signature? What do you need to write (coffee, chocolate, wine, music…)?

I outline all my books. Each story is unique. Different characters. Different plots. I love originality. I drink a lot of coffee while writing and need complete silence without interruptions.

4. Why dark romance? What draws you to this genre?

I love horror and often root for the villain, hoping for his/her happy ending. Dark romance allows me to expose redeeming qualities in a villain or anti-hero and give him/her a hard-earned love story.

5. Where did you find your idea for your books?

I am inspired by real life news stories. Truth is stranger than fiction, right? There are so many fascinating, terrifying things happening around the world every day.

6. Beneath the burn was one of your first book. What was the hardest thing about writing this book?

BENEATH THE BURN features a villain so terrible I could not redeem him. The heroine suffers greatly at his hands. The torture and abuse were the hardest things to write in this story.

7. How do you choose and build your characters? Give us an insight into your main characters of Beneath the Burn. What do they do that is so special?

I love tortured heroes. Both Charlee and Jay are haunted by their tragic pasts. Their backstories are painful to experience, but their survival makes them strong and their stories inspirational.

8. What books have most influenced your life most? 

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice and Kushiel’s Legacy by Jacqueline Carey.

9. Who are your favorite authors?

Jacqueline Carey, Jewel E. Ann, Lydia Michaels, Emma Scott, Kresley Cole, R. Lee Smith

10. Outside of writing, do you have any hobbies and/or anything you’re passionate about?

Naturally, I love to read. I prefer to spend my time reading over anything else. I also love gardening and taking care of my retired greyhounds.

11. What are your current and future projects? Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I’m currently working on a dark historical pirate romance, SEA OF RUIN. Expected to release by the end of 2019. Then I will finish the final three books in my dark romance series, the Deliver series. UNSHACKLE (book 7). DOMINATE (book 8). COMPLICATE (book 9). Coming 2020.
